In anticipation of American Classic's Trip to New Orleans in 2017, Mary wanted to share why she is dying to go back to New Orleans!

1. hotel monteleone
All 4 nights of our trip to New Orleans will be spent at this 4-star luxurious, historic hotel located in the French Quarter. The spacious guestrooms and elegant appointments were wonderfully pampering. The breakfasts conveniently served in the Criollo Restaurant on property were an absolutely scrumptious way to begin each day - I tried something new each time and would recommend them all! My visit to the Carousel Bar for a nightcap was a great way to end the day. This popular gathering place features a 25-seat, bright, circus-clad Merry-Go-Round that actually spins. The Carousel is so unique that it has been named by Vogue as one of the top 20 Bars in the World – I couldn’t agree more, it was special!
2. Culture
New Orleans has a unique culture like no place else in the USA. The location of New Orleans and the influx of immigrants produced a distinctive melting pot intertwining European, African, Native American & Creole cultures evident today in the food, the architecture, and New Orleans traditions.
3. Mardi Gras
New Orleans is known for its over the top celebration of Mardi Gras. Although we do not visit during Mardi Gras, you can enjoy the tradition without the crowds and the craziness. Mardi Gras World brings visitors the fun and color of the Carnival Parade Floats in a unique way so one can appreciate the technology, skill and history of this world famous pageant.

4. Swamps
I’m a Midwest gal and never knew a swamp could be so interesting. Our local swamp guide navigated our boat and shared his adventures growing up on Honey Island Swamp. He was the Louisiana version of Huckleberry Finn! Alligator, feral pigs, birds of many kinds were easily spotted throughout our time in the swamp. The only thing I didn’t see (nor did I miss) were mosquitos – he said they don’t have any which was a welcome discovery!
5. New Orleans Cuisine
Everywhere we went the beauty and hospitality of the South embraced us. We enjoyed delicious Southern Cooking at many restaurants including the famous New Orleans School of Cooking where seeing and eating made me a believer!
6. Housmas House Sugar Plantation
Learning about plantation life & history transported us to a time gone by at the Housmas House Sugar Plantation.
7. National World War II Museum
At the National World War II Museum, state of the art exhibits and presentations revealed many educational gaps I had regarding the conditions that lead to World War II and the War Years. To say I was gripped by this museum isn’t doing it justice. I would love to go back and spend more time there, it was a tribute to the men and women who served their country that lead to the freedoms we enjoy today. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more and have a deeper appreciation of their selfless sacrifices.

For me, New Orleans was a five day travel experience that deepened my knowledge and appreciation of the people and places visited. I feel this is an experience worth sharing and advocating. My recommendation is to experience this one for yourself – you’ll be glad you did!
