Inside America's Oldest Capital City
By: Joe Conroy
This May a group of American Classic Travelers will embark on a journey to a unique land - New Mexico. To preview this tour, Joe wanted to explain why he think Santa Fe is America's most unique city and why the Taos Pueblo is a must-see historical attraction.
Santa Fe
History
If you were to guess what is America's oldest state capital city, what answer comes to mind? Boston, MA? Richmond, VA? The correct answer is not an east-coast colonial city; it is Santa Fe New Mexico! Santa Fe was founded by the Spanish in 1610, making it 20 years older than the city of Boston.
Culture
Whether it's the food, art galleries, architecture or the spiritual tradition, Santa Fe's culture is one-of-a-kind. This unique culture was sculpted by a number of different influences - Native American, Spanish, American and western-cowboy culture.
The Taos Pueblo
Most historians and anthropologists seem to agree that the Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America. This UNESCO World Heritage site is thought to have been the home of the Puebloan People for over 1,000 years! The Taos Pueblo is still an active home to about 4,500 Native Americans today.
